About the Artist
J. E. Seames was born one morning on the 15th day of February in a year midway through the 1980s, according to the Gregorian calendar. She is a she, and was born in Saudi Arabia to an American chemical engineer and his lovely wife, and they all trekked back across the ocean when the Persian Gulf War came into swing. The wee JoJo enjoyed writing, drawing, giggling at artistic nudes in museum catalogues, and reading the dictionary. Her favorite letter was K. She first became interested in comics around the age of six, when she first began reading Berke Breathed's "Bloom County", all the while amazed that she was allowed to. When she was eight, she drew her first comic series, a set of one-page gags that made up the superhero parody "The Adventures of Bugman".
She had an awkward adolescence wherein she was routinely ostracized from her peers and placed in waste recepticles and lockers. She's pretty okay with that, though.
In high school she started seriously drawing cartoons, and abandoned any notions of teenaged existential angst by funnelling them into the characters of "Onieros", which was begun in its first incarnation in 1999, according to the same Gregorian calendar.
In 2003 she realized that she needed to become a professional illustrator, and in 2004 she began attending the University of Arizona's College of Fine Arts, in Tucson. She's still there, now, but she's closer to that fancy piece of paper that declares that she knows what she's doing.
In 2007, JoJo self-published a comic magazine, "Gutter Space", with a small group of collaborators. In 2008, her first solo graphic novel, "Dis: Life is Hell", was published by Bohemian Trash Studios.
JoJo's primary visual influences are Tex Avery, Bill Watterson, Chuck Jones, Hitoshi Okuda, Jeff Smith, Yukito Kishiro, Adrian Alphona, Al Capp, Patrick Zircher, Berke Breathed, and Kim Jae-Hwan.
JoJo's primary writing influences are Victor Hugo, C. S. Lewis, Frank Herbert, Jane Austen, Berke Breathed, Jeff Smith, J. R. R. Tolkien, Katsuhiro Otomo, Fabian Nicieza, Hajime Yatate, Lynda Barry, Darby Conley, Yukito Kishiro, and Brian K. Vaughn.
JoJo is a protestant Christian. She doesn't bite.
She's a mite obsessive over Greek mythology, Shakespeare, comic books, and history. She also really likes music, movies, and food.
Her favorite colors are green, purple, and red.
Her favorite foods are shish taouk, anything made out of cabbage, fried okra, Dr Pepper, and carne asada burritos from Nico's Taco Shop.
Her favorite bands are Third Eye Blind, Twisted Sister, Radiohead, Project 86, Demon Hunter, David Bowie, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Our Lady Peace, Led Zeppelin, Skillet, and Duran Duran.
Her favorite movies are "The Maltese Falcon", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Akira", "Casablanca", "Amelie", "300", "Metropolis", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "Princess Mononoke", "The Fifth Element", and "Sin City".
Her favorite United States president is Martin Van Buren.
Her favorite ancient Greek god may be speculated upon.
She doesn't care much for root beer, allergies, or the current trend of segregation in the cartoon world.
